Custom Knife Factory is taking steps to expand its market share with the introduction of a lower-priced sub-brand, called MKAD. The name MKAD comes from "Moscow Automobile Ring Road" (MKAD/МКАД), hence the brand's logo is ring-shaped. The MKAD series of knives share a lot in common with the CKF mid-tech production knives. They are designed by CKF and manufactured and by CKF factory using same typical high-end materials such as M390, titanium and carbon fiber. But with exclusion of exotic materials and high polished or hand finished parts, they have managed to keep the prices down. With introduction of more MKAD models, CKF is poised to beat big brand names such as Benchmade, Zero Tolerance & Spyderco at build quality, design and materials, meanwhile keeping the price very competitive.

The MKAD Empat is designed by Anton Malyshev, a well known Russian knife maker and long time designer for CKF. The Empat features a simple and classic design with titanium construction and marbled carbon fiber handle scalse. The lock side is fitted with the same CF scales that covers most of the lockbar for a uniform look on both sides. This is commonly referred to as "bolster lock". The handle design is truly elegant, clean and very comfortable in hand.
 
The blade is made from M390, arguably the best all-round steel in the market, and also the most popular. CKF is known for their exceptional heat treatment that brings out the full potential of the M390 steel. The  moderate harpoon style blade feautures a top swedge with satin flats and fine stonewashed grinds. This simple and clean blade design has a great cutting edge to blade length ratio, making it a very capable and comfortable all-round cutter,
 
As usual with CKF knives, the MKAD Empat has a very pleasant action. The blade deployment is fast and closing action is drop shut smooth. The knife comes in a high quality zippered pouch with a full set of spare hardware. The inclusion of the hardware is very generous for this price point and something that is not offered by other brands.
