A Very Sought After & Collectible Early Al Mar Alaskan Bowie. Stunning Vintage Knife
 
Al Mar was working for an industrial design firm in Los Angeles in 1967. Gerber's first designer retired about this time and Al Mar joined Gerber Legendary Blades in 1967 or 68 (American Blade magazine Dec. 1976) after Pete Gerber gave Al the task of coming up with an aluminium handle for a kitchen knife. Pete Gerber thought the project was very successful and offered Al the position of design chief. Al is credited with designing the Gerber
Mark I.
He left Gerber in 1979 to start Al Mar Knives and he died in October of 1992 aged 54. The new owners have now discontinued most of the original models and moved to other makers on the remaining models. This leaves the knives made while Al was in control of the company very desirable and collectible! 
 
This Vintage Alaskan Bowie is a huge knife at 44 cm long with a beastly blade stretching just over 30 cm. When you pick up the Alaskan Bowie, you know right away that this knife was built for serious business. It's a survival weapon in the hands of men who would trust their lives with this it. The quality and craftsmanship that this knife offers is hardly seen in newer production knives these days unfortunately.  While the Alaskan Bowie is enormous, it feels comfortable in the hand. This particular model comes with the sought after "coffin" handle. 
 
Overall, this knife is in great vintage condition and makes a fantastic addition to any decent fixed blade collection

The blade has some minor marks appropriate for its age
The front 5 cm of the blade has chips as shown in photos. Can be easily reprofiled/ sharpened
The front of handle has a superficial crack under the pin as shown in photo
Sheath in great vintage condition with minor signs
